Currency Exchange
The monetary system in Canada is based on dollars and cents, like their neighbors to the south in the United States, but the value is not currently equal between countries. To avoid exchange problems, visitors are advised to exchange their funds to Canadian dollars at a bank or a foreign currency exchange outlet.
To find out what your local currency converts to in Canadian dollars, you can use this currency converter:

Taxes
Most purchases in British Columbia are subject to sales tax totaling 14% (7% Provincial Sales Tax and 6% Federal Tax called the GST ) of the purchase price. The provincial sales tax (PST) of 7% applies to retail purchases with the exception of liquor, which is taxed at 10%. Some items, including groceries, restaurant meals, children's clothing and books, are PST exempt.
The federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 6% is applicable to most purchased goods and services. If you are visiting Victoria from outside of Canada you are eligible for a tax refund.
You can obtain applications from most major downtown department stores or check with Revenue Canada Office at 910 Government St. (Monday to Friday).
If you are driving out of the country, you can stop by participating Canadian duty-free shops (for a cash refund up to a maximum of $500.00 Canadian).
You qualify for a tax refund if:
You are not a resident of Canada
You have original receipts
Purchase amounts (before taxes) of short-term accommodations and goods on which you paid GST/HST total at least $200.00 Canadian.
For goods, each individual receipt shows a minimum purchase amount (before taxes) on which you paid GST/HST of $50.00 Canadian.
